Founded in 2013 through the merger of the historic Scottish Football League and the Scottish Premier League, the Scottish Professional Football League comprises Scotland’s top four football divisions and oversees two national cups. Operated as a corporation, its 42 member clubs own the SPFL, each holding a vote on crucial decisions like rule changes and contracts.

With a 6% increase in turnover between the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons and a 24% growth in TV audiences over 23/24, the SPFL continues to gain momentum, driven by passionate fans and thrilling competition.

For over 15 years, Elms has been the exclusive licensee for letters, numbers, and sleeve badges to the SPFL.

Client requirements

The SPFL required a partner who could deliver consistent, high-quality branding solutions across all four divisions of Scottish professional football. Their specific needs included:

  1. Unified branding across all divisions to maintain professional standards from the Premiership to League Two.
  2. Durable solutions capable of withstanding Scotland’s challenging weather conditions.
  3. Quick turnaround times to support clubs’ merchandise operations.
  4. Cost-effective solutions that work for clubs of varying sizes and resources.

How we helped

Since 2009, Elms has served as the exclusive licensee for letters, numbers, and sleeve badges to the SPFL, supporting Scottish football through a period of significant transformation and growth.

Our technical solution utilises two specialised manufacturing techniques to meet the diverse needs of Scottish football:

  • Letters and numbers are produced using PS Pro, our original polyurethane-based product, delivering low-profile, lightweight transfers that maintain their quality in all weather conditions. This technology allows for precise colour matching and variable patterns, ensuring each club’s unique identity is accurately represented.
  • Sleeve badges are crafted using Pro S technology, our innovative textile-based solution that offers superior comfort and performance. This lightweight transfer technique provides exceptional quality while ensuring players’ comfort.

This dual approach ensures that every piece of branding, from the numbers on a striker’s back to the sleeve badges representing the competition, meets the high standards expected in modern football while accommodating the practical needs of clubs across all four divisions.

The longevity of our relationship with the SPFL speaks to our understanding of football’s unique requirements and our ability to deliver solutions that work for clubs at every level of the professional game. From the largest Premiership clubs to the smallest League Two teams, our products help maintain professional standards, contributing to Scottish football’s continued success.

What they say

The SPFL and Elms have been partners for around 15 years. The reason the partnership between the SPFL and Elms has been successful is across three areas; reliability, trust and collaboration.

Andrew Sinclair

Head of Partnerships, SPFL

We have a wide range of clubs across the divisions that have different needs, from our Premiership clubs, which have large squads and fanbases, to clubs in League Two, which may be working at a part-time level. However, Elms is able to service those clubs with the same level of excellent customer service.
